Chief Executive Officer,
Geoecology Energy Organisation [GEO]

Dr. Sai Bhaskar Reddy Nakka is an Environment and Development professional with Geoecology Energy Organisation [GEO], an initiative to mitigate climate change through adaptation. An ardent campaigner of Open Knowledge and he is against patenting technologies meant for common people. He is having about 15 years experience, contributing to environment and developmental aspects.

Since childhood he was inspired by nature and environment. Studied double master of sciences - in Applied Geology from Indian Institute of technology, Mumbai and also Geography. For his PhD pursued “Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Studies of the Polluted Water at Patancheru Industrial Area, Medak Dist., A.P., INDIA”. Which is  one of the most polluted industrial area in Asia. Qualified the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India fellowship to do the PhD. He also qualified as CDM / Lead Verifier, and a specialist of Information Visualization and Graphics, GIS / RS, ICTs, Information visualization and Participatory Monitoring tools.

Presently, he is leading the Project "Good Stoves and Biochar Communities" in parts of Andhra Pradesh, India. In this project facilitating Good Stoves in parts of India, technology on biochar (charcoal) production from crop residue and other wasted biomass and biochar application for improving fertility of soil and as well addressing carbon sequestration.

He is into research and development of technologies for adoption by communities to mitigate climate change, environmental and geoecological degradation, etc. One of the important achievements is doing research and designing 50 'Good Stoves' by him, which were declared as Open Knowledge for the common good. Another important area of contribution is on "Biochar" - using charcoal produced from biomass for good. Introduced Biocharfor the first time in India, now being followed by communities, institutions as a means of soil management and sustainable agriculture. To broaden the use of Biochar for various purposes coined the term "Biocharculture". The tribal's living in the forests, poor, landless and small farmers are the main stakeholders, by using good stoves and biochar they are contributing to climate change mitigation, improvement in health, biomass conservation, etc.

Has been providing training's and participating in studies on good stoves and biochar in parts of India and abroad. He has declared facilitating "One Million Good Stoves" and "facilitating biochar to hunderd thousand people" mission i.e., to achieve in partnership with various stakeholders. He believes that Participatory Technology Development and facilitation involving all the stakeholders is the means for achieving the goals.  There is a requirement of at least 0.5 billion good stoves in the world. Diverse stove designs, low cost and with high efficiencies are required for adaptation, which would meet the social, environmental, economic, cultural aspirations of communities living in developing world.

To address the ENVIRONMENTAL, CLIMATE CHANGE, NATURAL AND HUMAN RESOURCES - AGRICULTURE, TERRA PRETA, WATER, ENERGY, SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS, DISASTER MITIGATION AND RESPONSE, and INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY aspects working with Geoecology Energy Organisation (GEO) Organisation. Many renowned National and International people have joined this organization to support the initiatives. The knowledge created on various domains related to the above areas is accessed everyday by at least 2000 people, shared through over 300 web-links created. Also providing on-line support to hundreds of people with queries, and doing capacity building to those interested people, organizations and agencies. Facilitating students interested in spending some time to learn on the above aspects at GEO research center.

Has successfully lead the project “Vulnerability Assessment and enhancing Adaptation to climate change in semi-arid parts of Andhra Pradesh” - A national level project supported by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) with objects of Policy Advocacy, Improved Delivery Systems and Implementation.

Also worked as additional coordinator for the DFID funded bilateral programme with the government of Andhra Pradesh on “Andhra Pradesh Rural Livelihoods Programme, impacting 2,500 villages directly and the learnings were adopted as policy for the whole state. Poverty reduction strategy, Natural resources Management, Monitoring and evaluation and ICTs for development are the areas of contribution.

Worked on the issues of Join forest Management in parts of Andhra Pradesh with 600 community forest management groups. Project supported by Hivos and NOVIB.

While doing the PhD lead the National Environmental Awareness Campaign Programme in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka States supported by Ministry of Environment and Forests, GoI. Also supported 10 major public interest litigation (PIL) cases related to environmental issues, including two PIL cases related to his own PhD field area on drinking water problem of communities and water pollution impacting the livelihoods of the communities living in the Godavari Basin.

He has conducted two major studies on the disaster response and mitigation related to Eathquakes, Cyclones and Floods. Supported social engineering aspect for the sustainability of Lift Irrigation Schemes and livelihoods in Andhra Pradesh State, covering about 1800 schemes and 1200 thousand acres of land.

He has core competencies in Project Management, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation; Documentation; Policy and Advocacy; Strategic Planning; Capacity Building; Research, Participatory Technology Development, Organisational / Community Development; and Sustainable Livelihoods through diversification and innovative Strategies.

Presently he is focussed on climate change, environment, good stoves, biochar production, water for irrigation and drinking and applications, sustainable livelihoods, disaster mitigation, food security, energy, vulnerability and adaptation, and development areas. He also gives lectures at the Institutes and Universities as Guest faculty on the above aspects.
