We
have seen great leaders and famous people all over giving credit to their
parents for their success. No one can deny the fact that without the support
and encouragement of our parents we are nothing. We have seen our parents
struggling to fulfil our needs right from our childhood but the times have
changed. The modern parents today, give everything to their children even
before they demand or ask for it. Everything is served to them on a platter and
they do not have to earn it. They are doing all this in order to overcome their
guilt which is born because of not being able to spend time with their kids.
Parents themselves are so busy in their respective jobs that it is hardly
possible for them to spend time with their kids. What they don’t realise it is
all this is not enough to compensate for the better upbringing of their
children. Nothing can be dearer to a
child than the presence of his parents. In the words of Glozell: “Parenting is
not giving your children everything they want. Parenting is not being your
child’s friend. Parenting is about preparing your child to be useful and
respectful person in the society.”
The
new generation parents must understand that along with their expensive gifts
there are basic values which need to be taught to the children at the right age
and in right manner. There are some basics which can help in effective
parenting :
- · LISTEN – It is very important to listen carefully to what children are trying to convey. It has been proved in various researches that in cases where the parents are good listeners, their children are not only confident but outshine other children. This can also help in reducing a number of other problems like child abuse etc.
- · LEAD BY EXAMPLE – We all aware that children are very good at copying and they copy their siblings and parents most of the time. So, in order to teach them in an easy and effective manner one should be a role model for their children.
- · GIVE THEM CHOICES – One of the most important factor is to let your child make his/her choices. Parents should always impart values wherein the children understand the difference between the right and the wrong so that they are able to make the right choice for themselves. This will make them independent and successful.
One
has to be very careful while dealing with the kids as one cannot be fully
strict or fully lenient with them. It requires the right amount of balance and
lots of patience. Though all the above mentioned factors are vital aspects of
effective parenting, the amount of time spent with the children remains the top
most priority. Jane D. Hull has rightly said :
“At
the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the
positive involvement of his parents.”
