Apart from the main responsibility of defending the borders of the country, the Armed Forces render assistance to civil authority, when called upon to do so, for the maintenance of law and order, maintenance of essential services, disaster relief and other types of assistance. Notable instances of such assistance rendered in the recent past are enumerated in succeeding paragraphs.

Gujar Agitation: - Rajasthan - Violent clashes took place between local police and members of the Gujar Community on Jaipur - Agra Highway in the gen area of Patauli -Mahuwa (70 kms from Jaipur). The community was agitating, demanding inclusion in the ST list, when the situation took a violent turn. On receipt of requisition from Government of Rajasthan, on 29 May 2007, 39 Army Columns were deployed at Dausa, Sawai Madhopur, Alwar, Dhaulpur, Kota, Jhalawar, Bayana, Bundi Dists and NH -8 (Delhi - Jaipur). Consequent to agreement reached and withdrawal of agitation on 05 June 2007, the Gujar community commenced dismantling of blockade at Patauli - Mahuwa along NH-11 (Jaipur - Agra). Accordingly, Army columns were de-requisitioned on 05 June 2007.
Siliguri - Sectarian clashes occurred in Siliguri (District Darjeeling) on 28 September 2007. Consequent to requisition of District Magistrate Darjeeling, two composite Army columns were deployed in the general area of Court Complex, Siliguri City. On arrival of the columns at the site the mobs dispersed. On request of District Magistrate Darjeeling the columns carried out flag marches from 290915 hours to 291030 hours. The columns were derequisitioned at 301615 hours.
Kolkata - On 21 November 2007, a local protest march in Kolkata turned violent and the law and order situation deteriorated. Consequently, a request was received from the State Government for Army Columns to carry out flag marches. Accordingly, four Army Columns were deployed at 1500 hours on 21 November 2007. On restoration of normalcy, the columns were derequisitioned by the civil administration at 1430 hours on 23 November 2007.
Assam - All Adivasi Students Association of Assam called for a 36 hour Assam Bandh on 26 November 2007 to protest against violence against Adivasis during a rally in Guwahati on 23 November 2007. Civil administrations requisitioned Army columns at Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Jorhat and Dhubri on 27 November 2007 and 28 November 2007. Accordingly, seven columns were earmarked / deployed.
The Indian Army has always responded with requisite alacrity and professionalism to numerous requests for assistance. In the recent past, notable instances are as under :-
(a) Leh - Army assistance in maintenance of law and order was requisitioned by the civil administration at Leh on 07 February 06. A total of 15 columns were requisitioned by the civil administration and were deployed at Leh and Kargil, to restore normalcy.
(b) Vadodara - Consequent to the upsurge of communal violence in Vadodara on 03 May 06, the District Authorities requisitioned for Army assistance. Four Army columns ex Vadodara and Ahmedabad were deployed in Mandvi - Fathepura and Ravpura for maintenance of law and order. The columns were derequisitioned on 12 May 06.
(c) Gharsana - Consequent to the farmers of Gharsana and adjoining areas agitating against the non-availability of adequate water for irrigation, Army was requisitioned by civil administration and two columns were dispatched to Gharsana at 1830 hours on 16 October 2006 . Curfew was imposed and the columns carried out flag marches on 17 October and 19 October 2006. On restoration of normalcy, the columns were derequisitioned at 1800 hours on 19 October 2006.
Maintenance of Essential Services
Due to general strike by Government medical officers of Maharashtra, civil administration of Pune requested for 20 doctors to deal with serious cases on 08 March 06. The aid was provided as requested.
